High Cholesterol, Weaker Bones?
High cholesterol could put you at risk for osteoporosis. In a recent study at Italy's University of Milan, postmenopausal
women with LDL (or bad) cholesterol above 160, the level experts consider high,
were twice as likely to have weakened bones as women with lower LDL. Research
conducted at the UCLA suggests that cholesterol accumulates near
new bone cells
and prevents them from growing. The good news: cholesterol-lowering
drugs seem to improve bone density.
